Introduced in 2019, our grass fed beef herd is comprised of Dexter cattle. The Dexters are raised solely on pasture and browse, locally sourced unsprayed hay, and unsprayed and/or organic alfalfa. The herd is moved multiple times a week and protected from the sun by a shade and water wagon. During the winter months they have the option of a run-in shelter for use during inclement weather.
What is a Dexter?
A Dexter is a dual purpose heritage breed of cattle that originated in southern Ireland during the 19th century, and could not only thrive on fields and forage, but produce both quality beef and milk while doing so. Dexter beef is lean and their milk great for the production of butter and cheeses. They are known for their small stature, standing just 40" in height and weighing 700-900 pounds when full grown. (Keep in mind a full grown Angus bull would weigh twice as much.) Since a 1,000lb animal will yield about 440lbs of meat, the small stature of the Dexter allows families to buy quarter, half, and whole cows that produce a more manageable amount of beef for their family to consume in a year's time.
