Our Cornish-Cross broiler chickens are received from the hatchery as day old chicks. Unlike most chicken that you buy at the grocery store, our chickens will spend the majority of their lives outside in movable pens called chicken tractors, moved daily to fresh pasture until they are around seven weeks of age, at which time they will be ready for your dinner table. There the chickens have access to all the nutritional benefits the pasture holds, along with locally sourced non-GMO grains and fresh water. These chickens never see antibiotics or hormones before they arrive at your dinner table. A whole chicken weighs approximately 3.5 to 6lbs.
How can a chicken be butchered?
You can choose to have your chicken butchered in three different ways. Chickens can either be kept whole, or halved or pieced (for an additional fee). Halved chickens include both halves of a whole chicken but no giblets. Pieced chickens include: a split breast, two leg quarters (leg with thigh attached), two whole wings, back, neck and giblets.
How much space will I need in my freezer?
Four whole chickens = about 1 cubic foot of freezer space
Pieced chickens will take up the same amount of freezer space as a whole chicken if stored in the original packaging from the butcher. We suggest that once purchased, pieced chickens should be separated into freezer bags before freezing for ease of use when preparing meals.
